Post subject: Post-Update 58 Community Questions & Answers Megathread

Greetings all,

The team is discussing numerous questions and comments I've forewarded to them from the forums and from social media. We'll be updating this thread with answers as we have them. Some of them will be answered as a part of a larger update this month. 

Kickstarter/Steam/Sales related:

  • How do we get a refund? Are you doing refunds, and if not, can you say so?
    • We'll have more information coming on this topic at a later time. There are many considerations, legalities, process creating, and whatnot. As soon as there is a final resolution, we'll update everyone. 
  • What about when we can expect the next update?
    • We're looking at transitioning from large Kickstarter Updates to a regular cadence of information sharing, design notes, Q&As, Dev Spotlights, and more. 
  • When do we backers get the alpha & beta game too?
    • We'll have more information after we share the updated roadmap with the community.
  • When do backers submit their design doc and get it done?
    • We will have information on submitting and such after we reveal the community roadmap.
  • What is the state of funding for the game?
    • Funding is fine. We're on target.
  • Also, when do you think we'll get updated documents for the design tier backers?
    • We'll have more information on that once we have the new roadmap for you.
  • When can I expect to get my NPC character sheet that was supposedly expected in DEC 2014 never received.
    • It's on the list of things for the roadmap discussion.
  • When will you send me my character sheet or PDF files to start working on my dam character. I'm sick of waiting.
    • We appreciate your patience. We truly do. We'll have more of that information shortly.
  • When can we expect at bare minimum a pre alpha or beta? It's been since 2013. 3 years roughly.. I expect at least a pre-alpha by dec 2017 latest.
    • We'll definitely be outlining all that when we roll out the roadmap next month.
  • Has anything changed with the deliverables for the backer Tiers or is everything that was in place previously still stand as it was?
    • More information coming soon, and definitely for the roadmap discussions.
  • Have any of the Ensign rewards have been up yet? 
    • Not at this time. It's something we'll have more information on soon. 

Game related:

  • When will we get a game progress update?
    • We're working on one right now, along with the updated roadmap to share with you.
  • When will there be a road map?
    • We have an updated roadmap and will be revealing one for the community next month. 
  • When will there be Dev Blogs
    • Look for a Dev Blog later this month. We will be publishing them on a regular basis after the roadmap is revealed. 
  • Where is the adventure mode video that was promised us last update?
  • When can we expect the alpha and beta to start?
    • We'll have that information once we have the roadmap for you next month. 
  • When can we expect to get access to the design tools we need to fulfill our pledge rewards?
  • Have any significant changes been made to the original design? Removing ground/planet exploration for example, anything on that scale?
  • How about showing the art that has changed? You know a good side-by-side  with the old and the new. Screenshots, concept art, anything!
    • The art style has not changed. We know we have a lot of older concept art and we are definitely going to get new art assets for you, such as Wallpapers and such.
  • Regarding the timeline: Dec year 2016? 1st Q 2017? or when is the full version?
    • We will go over all that when we announce the roadmap next month.
  • What is the approximate state of the game at the moment?
  • What sort of changes have been made to the game aesthetics? I supported because I liked the look of the Mandate, has it changed?
  • What will and won't be changing in the game itself? You promised the moon with the KS and I'd like to know what we will really be getting (if at all).
  • You mentioned clusters, and having finished the first with four suns. I'm wondering about the scope of the game, how many clusters can we expect?
  • How many unique events/encounters can we expect to be in the final game (ballpark figure)
  • Will we be getting updated lore documents? At the risk of nagging, a while back I mentioned I suspect there is a, particularly interesting, subfaction lore update which was never released.
    • Yes, there are planned updates for the community. Will let you know when I know more.
  • What is the current vision for NPC promotion? For instance, is promotion a manual or automatic process, or an automatic process where the player can intervene if desired?
  • Do NPC's still have individual personality traits? On a related note, I believe it was mentioned that NPC's will still have non-combat personal interactions, is that the case? If both are in, will personality traits lead to different individual and group interactions outside combat? Will NPC's form groups, gangs, and perhaps power blocks within crews outside the mission system?
  • How much freedom of movement and autonomy is currently planned for the player character? Could we literally blast ourselves out an airlock and fly away on suit thrusters to the airlock of another friendly ship?
    • Alas, you can not airlock yourself. 

Community:

  • What are the current plans for community updates; monthly, bi monthly?
    • We hope to start updating on a regular basis. I'm waiting on a final confirmation on the team before I make promises. 
  • Is an update to the forum software a possibility? Preferably to XenForo, which has many features which facility easier member interaction and post management. Along with that, is updating the front page planned for?
    • Yes, we definitely need an update for our website and our forums. I know you would love to see these just as much as we do. 
  • Will you schedule official Q&A sessions here at some point or do you have any plans at all for the chat? 
    • Yes, we'll have some Q&A on the forum, and we'll have some in the official chat. Plus we might do some on Twitter or other platforms.
  • Will you be at Gamescom? Will you be at PAX?
    • We won't have a presence at Gamescom, but maybe we'll have a fan meetup where you can meet members of the team. How many of you would come to a meetup? For PAX West? We are talking about it. If we don't come as a team, would you come to a meetup?

Other :

  • Since this is apparently the place to ask questions: I have "design an officer" as one of my backer perks. The officer that I designed is written to come from "a remote autonomous Grand Duchy under Romanov rule". This is intended to be a reference to the Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous part of the Russian Empire from 1809 to 1917. I'm not sure to what extent there's any territory in the game's existing lore that would fit this description and backstory, but incorporating that reference would be really cool for us Finns, and also awesome for my character. :) Any chance of getting a place like that included in the universe, if there isn't already one? 
    • We love this idea! Let us come up with a plan and we'll get back to you. 
  • This update mentions new members of the team by name, but some posters are saying that the original team has been scrapped and that these individuals are their replacements. Is this an assumption or was it stated as fact in a previous update?
    • This is incorrect. Most people who started the project are still on the project. Some have moved on to other projects or positions. 
  • Who on the original team is still on the project? Did they make the move to Slovakia?
    • Most of the original teams is on the project and already reside in Slovakia. You'll get to meet many of them in our ongoing Dev Spotlight going live post-roadmap reveal.

Similarly, the web comic Erfworld has each update linked to the associated forum thread for discussions, and shows the 10 most recent posts with a reply box at the bottom for a quick comment.

Taken together those methods would draw more people to The Mandate forum rather than letting them stay isolated at Kickstarter.

- We cannot vac ourselves on purpose, but can we take an escape pod, shuttle, or fighter at any time?

- In the Battle Orchestrator the player ship is controlled manually, while the other ships use manually plotted routes. Similarly, in surface combat will the player character be controlled in a uniquely direct manner which contrasts with squad control? Will we be able to place our character as officer of a squad and control a squad in this more direct manner? Will we have to place our character in a squad for combat, and not be allowed purely individual control?

- At some point can we expect to see all of the concept art, down to the least scrawl?

I suppose most art heavy projects produce gobs of the stuff, but we usually only ever get dribbles of it in the form of art books and occasional tidbits in updates, blog posts, magazine clippings, and forum posts. It would be amazing having a full art index if for no other reason than to have the art, but also for its value as a reference, and as a peak into the inner working of a large project.

- The team has its origins in Massively Multiplayer Online games. What aspects of MMO's are seen as most favorable, and which least favorable? Which aspects are the most interesting from a development standpoint?

- Which MMO aspects are least obvious but most significant in The Mandate?

- Will missiles and ships lead targets in The Mandate for intercepts the same way guns have to lead targets to land a hit? Most games seem to have missiles and units which tail chase.

- Are bombers still expected to be in the game?

- Will fighters and bombers both carry heavy munitions?

Yes. I am looking at transitioning the team to having the items post on the site, and we simply post the same information to the Kickstarter. So, new users who are just finding the site, will find regular articles such as "Dev Diary", "Community Update", "Dev Q&A", and the like.

Cool.

- In the newest video the BO projection shows a flat image of space, is this merely a place holder composite until space can be shown in 3D within the bridge?

- Will objects displayed by the main display appears as holographic 3D objects partially in the bridge, rather than as a flat projection?

- Will ships cast shadows on planets? I noticed a moon casting a shadow on the gas giant it orbits, and the gas giant casting a shadow on its ring.

It might be better not to since it would throw the scale of things into doubt. Are the ships planet size, or are the planets teeny? That kind of thing.

- Will ship exhaust cast light on planets and stations, at least when on the dark side of objects?

That doesn't face the scale issue as much, since given powerful enough engine they might cast enough light to do something like that.

- Has engine and reactor technology for lore been decided, or is it still being determined, or determined to be left unstated?

I like this thread and everything it represents, but:

I don't understand how a regular cadance of information is going to be possible.   Other than an update that might show up within a month of the projected date, every possible social avenue has been negected for months if not longer.  Also I would recommend against drawing people towards the forums if it's going to take them months to get access or any sort of administrative support (speaking from experience).

I will believe it when I see it.

From the sounds of things there has been a major shake up on Perihelion's side. Numerous new faces and a dedicated community manager with a direct line to the dev team. 

The last few months have been bad communication wise, but we have had more contact in the past two weeks than the rest of the year. I am hoping that this is a turning point where Perihelion move from being a inexperienced startup (Company wise not game making experience) to being a more professional outfit with dedicated channels and the people for them.

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

- Will we abe able to turn sensors from active to passive, in order to control emission levels, to influence ship and fighter stealth values?

  • What can you tell us about research in The Mandate?
  • Is it purely technology, or will we be able to research methods such as new formations and better training?
  • How does it factor into vehicle and weapon customization?
  • Are heavy weapons (torpedoes, missiles, bombs) customizable, and to what extent?

Howdy all! 

Here's an upadte from Michael, the Producer, regarding your questions about the team and the location. 

 Hi all,

I would like to address a concern you guys might have, caused by the last producer letter when I mentioned the team. The team was not replaced – also we didn’t “relocate” to Slovakia – the programming team always was in Slovakia. 

It is always the best case when the team is at the same location because communication is so much easier if you are sitting right next to each other and can throw things at the game designer if you have a question. Communication is speeding up dramatically and so is productivity :)

That was the reason why I mentioned it in the last letter – I am sorry if that caused confusion. 

We had and still have game designers which are not working on-site because of personal reasons and also Garret our Art director is from the US (as is Donna and Greg). All of them are coming for a couple of weeks in August / September to work directly on-site (we are very excited). 

Just wanted to clarify that :)

Q - How far along was the game before it was rebuilt, and why was it rebuilt?

It happened long enough ago that I don't remember it clearly, except for the whole thing with developement being held up due to not yet having certain team members due to contract issues with their previous employers. I also remember that leading to more time to work on story and gameplay concepts, which lead to rebuilding. I am not clear on what exactly was reprogramed for the engine, and remade for art assets nor what was saved from early on, if anything.
