Update #67

Dear backers,

In March we went through difficult times, the team size was reduced to only a core team since January, as consequence of the still ongoing negotiations with our publisher about the remaining funding. We have been working on securing more fundings since the end of 2016. It is still a work in progress and we will follow up with you in upcoming developer's updates when we have managed to close a deal.

Despite having a smaller team, we have focused our efforts on improving the space combat.

Within this context we would like to invite you to answer this survey:

https://goo.gl/forms/8cllWWWhLbvnd1yT2

so we can collect more feedback from your side for our next iterations of space combat. The other aspects of the game will remain in our vision for the Mandate. Because of team size constraints, we can only tackle one big chunk at a time. Crew and missions aspects of the game had to be put on hold temporarily, but once space combat is more advanced, resources will be reallocated to work on these aspects of the game.

We currently have several hypothesis for the timeline and depending on the fundings we will refine our roadmap which will be shared with the whole community including the milestones for playtests, alpha and beta versions.

We aim to have a regular update every month. Please remember to direct your comments to the forums instead of the Kickstarter page as this is where we can best get back to you. Part of our next update we will do an open questions/answers session. You will be also able to see the progress in the space combat.

We are very grateful for the core community being still supportive for such long time.

The Mandate dev team

Thanks for a very honest and transparent update. I am in for the long run and perhaps you have turned the corner on the nadir of the development cycle.

Also, I think that survey is just a "way out" by forcing backers to say they want things that are simply not possible with the current team.

Yo, like, thanks for the update 'n all, but there should have been waaaaay more of these. So don't be surprised that the fans now have little to no trust in the game, with all the deviations from the original idea and the amount of time that had passed, a lot of people simply moved on. I mean, I'll play the game in whatever state it'll come out, unless it's totally mediocre in every conceivable way, which I hope it isn't. And if you honestly think that it's gonna be better than a generic space strategy in game - then keep up the good work, but if you think the game will be an underwhelming mess - don't even bother. Take your time, raise the funds, do whatever, but most of us want the original space combat and focus on the people in the ships, and that's the bottom line.

Well, it's how it is i guess. The Survey felt like there is a general lack of concept regarding what combat should be. I watched the video and was a bit of a get-real thing. It's probably just prototyping but what i saw didn't seem fun. Neither for players nor the dev. Think about what you can realistically archive and plan accordingly. Don't try to fulfill unrealistic expectations. I'd rather have simplistic visuals on a 2D plane with meaningful mechanics then the other way around.

Okay I get that you are in a difficult position, thank you for not just vanishing. But let's discuss the minimum viable product. Below I copied the start of the Kickstarter. It seems that story and the on-ship interactions are the most important thing. Question: Do you need a player controlled ship-to-ship combat mechanics at all? That video is such a disapiontment. After all these years, this is what you have built sofar in space combat, one of the most important aspects of the game? I have requested to be refunded before, but now I am sure this project has just been a waste of time and money. Please refund me.

While I agree with Lord Randy on the "preferred space combat variant", space batlles themselves are not that important to me (but their complexity presented during the campaign sure was great). What of other aspects of the game? The story, the intrigue, the adventure?

I'm not mad at 2D space combat. There are advantages to going this direction. But obviously the KS video looked like 3D was where things were, so people (including me) will be disappointed. And of course the time frame... At the risk of incurring the wrath of angry internet mobs... unless you pledged more than $30, asking for a refund is silly. KS is always a gamble whether things will turn out like you hoped, so suck it up and move on if you are no longer interested. I'm still waiting for Bloom and Sui Generis. But I also got Torment, Chime Sharp, Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity:OS, and others, for less than half price, and they all rock. Live and learn. Unless the project is completely cancelled and you can haul them before kickstarter court for failing to deliver anything, keep it in your pants.

On space combat - their complexity presented during the campaign sure was great - sums this up So you've admitted this has limited funding, no real progress, and limited support - after all these years.... We're no closer to anything are we? So how will design a captain work - the adds on promised the content packs... Are we gonna get anything even close to the pitch?

I'm not really too fussed about the ship to ship combat, I'm much more interested in the boarding combat and the interaction between the captain and the crew and their interaction with each other, remember this game was sold on the idea that it was going to be heavily influenced by TV shows like Star Trek and frankly there isn't much space combat in Star Trek it's more about crew interaction and the story. I'm interested in the boarding combat because that's quite unusual and I think done properly it will make an nice fresh twist on an already flooded game genre.

A frank update at least :) As someone stated above, space combat is not the only good thing about this game. I hope boarding and crew management will still be as engaging as it was shown to us before. I still believe in this project despite the financial issues, i have backed numerous projects which had similar issues, but still delivered in the end even if those product were different from what was promised at start.

Given that space combat is a large portion of what this game is, surely a small and inexperienced team would have focused on getting that right first, instead of blowing $700,000 of other people's money on extraneous stuff like lore building? I liked the boarding combat demonstrations. Although they were still pretty rough, boarding combat was what attracted me to this game as being a bit different. Having not seen anything about it since, is it even still part of the game? This space combat looks really underwhelming and what was the point of the survey? There is zero chance that you have the resources to change ship combat to a 3D battlespace now, so why ask the question? You have all the signs of an inexperienced studio severely lacking in confidence in what it is doing and desperately casting about for validation.

Honestly, it's probably better to not focus so much on space combat as opposed to focusing on the Captain actually being, you know, a Captain. The Mandate had been built on the idea that you're this person who's doing all these things - but what we're seeing is that the developers want a RTS that has nothing to do with what was originally shown to kickstarters. Honestly, you're better off at this point to make it so that the players only give orders for where to go and what kind of actions to take in space combats as opposed to trying to make RTS-like game systems if what was shown in the video is what's you're planning on releasing or working towards (ie lessen control over combat sort of like what Starpoint Gemini 2 tried to do). One of the other things that will become apparent as a problem is how to balance the whole boarding situation with game-clock. If the battle is still happening in space, how will a boarding action supposed to be resolved? These are all things that needs to be answered, and a RTS-type combat system is not going to work if you want "explainable gaming situations".

Rulers rule, and ministers minister, but why is the Universe in Chaos? True Loyalists should protect the Throne not just because it is their duty, but to put down Traitorous dogs so that Her Majesty can focus on ruling.

There's no use in being salty; frustration about the project struggling to meet its lofty goals is understandable, but some people need to remember that they were not purchasing a product but investing into a vision. This is the nature of kickstarter/crowdfunding. I'm following these developments with equal degrees worry and interest. On one hand, of course I'm sad that the game will remain far from the scope it originally set out to achieve, but on the other, I'm curious as to what will still be possible at this point. We may not get what we wanted, but it could still be fun. I have to agree with some of the other posters in there being merit in the possibility of just scaling back the focus on combat and instead looking at elements of ship/crew management, RPG and story. There are many strategy games with spaceships already, but few where you have to keep a crew together and interact with them on a personal basis. Crew interaction is a major theme in naval stories, from Hornblower to Das Boot, and perhaps The Mandate could explore this angle. Alternatively (or ideally in addition to the above), games like Starfleet Command or Leviathan Warships were quite fun for their tactical combat, and I could see even the early version of the game presented in the video to approach similar levels of enjoyable sci-fi naval warfare with just a little more visual polish. I really think they need to slow down ship movement speed to have the vessels feel more like cruisers and frigates as opposed to busy ants, though. Furthermore, the ships should not remain still when unloading their guns onto each other, as this looks quite anti-climatic. Again, take a page from Starfleet Command (or Leviathan Warships for its hybrid turn-based/realtime mechanics) and go from there. This can still turn out to be a fun little game, and I remain hopeful that it would support co-op play.

I hope you guys get the funding you need. I wish you could have gotten enough from Kickstarter to forgo the route of needing a publisher, I kind of thought that's why you did a Kickstarter in the first place, but I understand that video game development is not cheap in the slightest. That said, as a backer, my hope is that you take as long as you need to make the gameplay right. I don't really care in the end if the graphics are dated, as long as you get the gameplay right you'll have a classic that will be played for generations. If you cut corners in order to ship by a certain date or appease a publisher, the game will unfortunately surely be garbage. So again, take as long as you need. I'd also like to state publicly that only having 2d exploration and combat in a space game is repulsive, and that would be the wrong way to handle this.

i'm one o those backers who backed your game post-kickstarter campaign based on the success of your KS what i would like to know is if you can reveal to us how much funding you got afterward... and it would be nice to know how much funding you need to deliver good game... ... it's sad that you can't deliver playable part of the game already as at least you could put that as... "Early Access" on STEAM... "Games in Development " on GOG... ... that would allow us existing backers and new wave of backers to give you feedback... ... as game-developer i know the road is sometimes very rough so it's more about not giving up... unless there was nothing done, total mismanagement and you in red numbers too long...

Thanks for the update guys. I appreciate its been tough, especially for an independent developer that doesn't have the backing of a large company. On top of trying to get major support for the game, you should keep trying to get contributions from the fans. They way to do that is of coarse info updates. Between posting lengthy updates on this site, you should post daily on your Facebook page in order to garner support and interest in what your developing. I don't expect this game to be out this year. In fact maybe not even next year but I would rather wait than end up with a product that hasn't delivered. Remember don't just give us a development update. Give us lore updates and snippets from what your designing. Keep working at it and best of luck.

These guys haven't given a real update in months. We're lucky if they manage to put out 1 update per month that say something along the line of "had problems, soz" The really messed up part of it all is the devs themselves and how they outright lied about having problems to begin with. I'd say "refunds? Nice idea. But with what money?". Peri ran out of Kickstarter and Backer money more than two years ago, when they were first looking for a publisher. How they burnt through 700k+ US$ in that time? Only they could tell. But you don't let go most of your team except for the core people because you got tons of cash waiting on your bank account to be refunded to backers. Problem with refunds IMHO is that as per the kickstarter guidelines I know about Peri "only" needs to make a "viable effort" in delivering their proposed product. There are no guarantees that a KS will EVER be a product at all, as stated above, we only backed a "vision". And they might be terrible at managing anything, be it money, expectations, timelines or even their own vision of the game. But it sure seems they made a viable effort to TRY. And this is exactly why I don't see a lot of chance for refunds at all: 1) There isn't anything left to be refunded, they burnt through the money years ago 2) Contractually they never promised to deliver, only to actually TRY to deliver So, as much as I hate the way they managed or rather mismanaged this whole endeavor, I've given up on them ever delivering anything. I'll be surprised and delighted if they actually deliver "something", but it sure as hell won't have ANYTHING to do with what they promised in the KS - also, as stated above, "Shovelware with a great Backstory". Sad, but it happens.

Well, I kept quiet so far, knowing that game development is a difficult thing. I was impressed by the initial idea and also by the amount of stuff you already had once starting the Kickstarter campaign. But! You are two YEARS overdue and I do totally not see any progress to anywhere close to what you have promised. It would be funny if not sad; but as for now and how the development goes, people will die of old age before a playable game will be released. Also: You did a fine job collecting tons of money. And here we go, it seems all that is left (and some I do not know how well skilled programmers that have left) is a bag of empty promises. I payed a considerable amount and at this time I am not sure what I am more shocked about: The fact you are still trying to sell this "idea" or that we haven't been refunded yet. Sorry, but I am a patient person and know how much work programming is or at least can be when not having a clue. "The long journey home" is a great example of a small team doing great stuff in just 2,5 years. And here I don't see anything despite a big lack of everything. And foremost: What did you do with all the money in the short period of time???!

Where is the game hiding?
